DONGFENG-Powertrain assembly line

Complete powertrain assembly equipment for DONGFENG — four integrated lines for wheel reducers, middle & rear axle assemblies, and transfer cases, delivered as a turnkey package.

Background

DONGFENG, one of China’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, required a complete set of transmission and powertrain assembly equipment for its heavy-duty truck platform. The scope covered the entire drivetrain — from wheel reducers to final axle assemblies — demanding consistent quality and throughput across multiple interconnected production lines.

Challenge

The project presented several key challenges:

  • Wide product range — Four distinct assembly lines were required: wheel reducer, main reduction middle axle assembly, main reduction rear axle assembly, and transfer case assembly
  • Heavy component handling — Commercial vehicle powertrain parts are large and heavy, requiring robust material handling and ergonomic workstation design
  • Consistent quality across lines — Each line needed uniform torque control, press-fitting accuracy, and testing standards
  • Tight project timeline — All equipment needed to be manufactured, pre-tested, and installed within a coordinated schedule

Solution

Hongbo was selected as the sole equipment supplier for all four powertrain assembly lines. We delivered a complete turnkey solution including:

  • Wheel Reducer Assembly Line — Automated conveyance, bearing press-fitting stations, and gear mesh testing
  • Main Reduction Middle Axle Assembly Line — Heavy-duty pallet conveyor, multi-spindle tightening, and backlash adjustment stations
  • Main Reduction Rear Axle Assembly Line — Mirror configuration of the middle axle line, optimized for rear axle-specific assembly sequence and testing
  • Transfer Case Assembly Line — Flexible pallet-based system with automatic pressing, tightening, and end-of-line function testing

All four lines shared a common MES platform for unified production monitoring, torque traceability, and quality data collection.

Results

  • All four assembly lines delivered and commissioned as a complete powertrain production package
  • Uniform quality standards achieved across all product lines — first-time pass rate exceeded 97%
  • Heavy-duty material handling eliminated manual lifting, reducing operator fatigue and safety risks
  • Centralized MES enabled real-time visibility across the entire powertrain shop floor
  • Project delivered on schedule — all lines reached target cycle time within 4 weeks of commissioning
